OTTAWA - Foreign Affairs says a Canadian was among the revellers who perished in a New Year's Eve fire at a nightclub in Bangkok, Thailand.

A spokesman in Ottawa said consular officials have been in contact with the family to offer assistance and support.

No further information was released.

At least 62 people died in the fire at the Santika Club, which police said was likely sparked by a countdown fireworks display on the stage in the club.

The fire raced through the two-storey building with victims succumbing to the blaze, smoke inhalation and injuries from a stampede as hundreds of revelers tried to escape through a single main door.

Some remain in hospital in critical condition.

Police said criminal charges will be filed against Wisuth Setsawat, a Thai-Chinese businessman, who owned the club.
