Atwood, Callaghan, Toews to appear at International Festival of Authors

Published Tuesday June 30th, 2009

TORONTO - Canadian authors Margaret Atwood, Barry Callaghan, Anne Michaels and Miriam Toews are set to appear at the 30th annual International Festival of Authors.

The festival at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre, to be staged Oct. 21-31, will feature readings, panel discussions, onstage interviews and book signings.

Also in the Canuck lineup is Man Booker International Prize winner Alice Munro, who will launch her new collection "Too Much Happiness" and appear on opening night in conversation with U.K. author Diana Athill.

John Irving, Nicholson Baker, Debra Adelaide, Denise Mina, Tash Aw, Paul Theroux, Sarah Waters and Audrey Niffenegger are among international authors slated to present new novels.

The festival says that for its 30th anniversary it will provide more chances for the public to interact with authors, including late-night weekend events combining traditional readings with a party atmosphere.

It is also adding more "satellite" events across Ontario - in Barrie, Midland, Uxbridge and Orillia - to the existing ones in Burlington, Hamilton and Parry Sound.

Tickets for the Munro-Athill discussion and some other events have gone on sale at www.readings.org. Others will go on sale in September.
