Choice of health treatment in advance of illness under proposed N.S. law

HALIFAX - Nova Scotians will have the opportunity to determine the course of their personal care in advance of illness under proposed legislation introduced by the Conservative government.

The new law will allow people to give instructions on their medical treatment and personal care in the event they become incapacitated. The legislation will also provide instruction on the choice of a substitute decision-maker.

In a news release, Attorney General Cecil Clarke says the legislation offers people a "measure of control" in situations where they might otherwise be vulnerable.

Decisions can be made on the type of health care, nutrition and home-care services that can be made available to someone who is seriously ill.
