Ontario to cover six additional prescription drugs to provincial plan

TORONTO - Ontario is adding six prescription drugs to those covered under the Ontario Public Drug Programs, including one used by diabetics.

Lantus is an extended, long-acting insulin that is released slowly and constantly into the bloodstream to lower blood glucose levels.

Also being added to the list is Vectibix, a new intravenous drug used by colorectal cancer patients when standard chemotherapy is unsuccessful.

The other drugs are Rasilez for hypertension, Orencia for rheumatoid arthritis, and Enbrel and Raptiva, both for psoriasis.

The Ontario Public Drug Program provides coverage for seniors, residents in long-term and special care homes, cancer patients and others.

Each year, some 2.8 million Ontario residents receive $3.8 billion in drug benefits from the program.
